A child is brought to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center by helicopter, and the parents drive to Augusta, several states away, all the while worried about whether or not their son or daughter will be alive when they arrive. They leave with only the clothes on their backs and little money. Where will this family stay during their child's lengthy hospitalization? How will they obtain additional clothing and afford regular meals? If they are indigent, how will they ensure their child has all of the specialized garments, dressings, and medications that are critical for a successful recovery?
This is where the Southeastern Firefighters’ Burn Foundation (SFBF) steps in. We’re here to help these families. The Joseph M. Still Burn Center , at Doctors Hospital , is located in Augusta, Georgia. Families of burn patients, as well as burn patients who receive treatment at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center , are referred to us and then provided shelter and comfort at our Jeffrey Vaden Chavis House at the Shirley Badke Retreat . With the help of our generous volunteers , the Burn Foundation is able to provide meals once a day, seven days a week. Additionally, the SFBF provides pressure dressings to burn patients free of charge for their long-term care.
The Southeastern Firefighters’ Burn Foundation support extends far beyond our Augusta, GA location; our aid recipients come from all over the US. In fact, More than 3,000 patients are admitted to the Burn Center annually; that’s approximately 7.6% of the nation’s burn patients. Generous support from donors and volunteers enables us to continue touching the lives of families who find themselves in need of our services.
